Go With the Flo

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that Flo is one of the best brunch spots in Chicago. I realize this is one bold statement, but after several years of frequenting this West Town joint, I feel I have consumed enough of their food to support this claim.
Flo brings a strong Mexican/Southwestern influence to their breakfast, lunch and dinner dishes, with the exception of their sweet brunch items (‘cuz that would be weird).

I fell in love with Flo when I tasted the Green Chile Chicken Enchiladas for the first time. The yellow corn tortillas stuffed with marinated chicken are smothered in a green chile sauce that’s so good, I could drink it. It gets a little stressful when I show up at Flo before 11AM, because I decided before that time, it’s just too early for chicken enchiladas. And let’s be honest, if I were at any other place, I wouldn’t even be considering something that heavy for my first meal of the day; but when my eyes meet those words on the menu, it’s just so hard to look away.

There have been a few instances when I did arrive at Flo before 11AM and I was forced to branch out from my first love. It was during those times that I discovered another incredible dish – Huevos Rancheros. This is a tortilla filled with cheddar cheese and topped with over medium eggs and then covered in red chile sauce, which is just about as amazing as the green chile sauce. Their homemade sauces are really what make the dishes so incredible.

Flo’s Original Burrito is another popular order at my table; this consists of a spinach tortilla stuffed with scrambled eggs, pickled Jalapenos, roasted Poblanos, pico de gallo, cheddar cheese, an addition of turkey sausage, and served with home fries and black beans. And we were delighted to discover recently that a smaller portion of the pancakes can be ordered, ya know, in case you want just a taste. If you’re a brunch boozer or enjoy a drink with your dinner, Flo’s full bar offers yummy mimosas with fresh squeezed orange juice, Bloody Marias with a house blended mix, and margaritas.

Below is our brunch from Sunday, which I’m still dreaming about. I had the enchiladas (it was JUST after 11AM) and my husband had the Huevos Rancheros with scrambled eggs, and we shared one banana chocolate chip pancake. Perfection!
