Stars and Stripes

4th of July weekend is all about spending time outside with friends and family, barbecuing and embracing the heat and summer sun. I’m spending my 4th of July weekend in Saint Louis, like I have for the past few years. Today we’re going to our friend’s lake house for boat rides and barbecuing.

In an effort to be patriotic, I decided a Red, White and Blue Trifle dessert would be the perfect contribution to our cookout. If you too are looking for an easy and delicious dish to bring to your 4th of July party, this Food Network recipe will not disappoint.

Happy 4th of July!

Red, White and Blue Trifle

Red, White and Blue Trifle

What You Need

  • 1 box red velvet cake mix

  • 1 (16 ounce) tub whipped topping

  • 2 pints blueberries

  • 1 pint strawberries, tops removed

What To Do

  1. Bake the red velvet cake according to package directions and allow to cool.

  2. Using a serrated knife, cut the red velvet cake into 1 inch square pieces and line the bottom of the trifle bowl with half of the cake squares.

  3. Using a spatula, spread about a 2-inch layer of whipped topping on top of the cake squares.
  4. Layer about 1½ pint of blueberries on top of the whipped topping.

  5. Layer the remaining cake pieces on top of the blueberries forming a second layer of cake.

  6. Using a spatula, spread the remaining whipped topping over the cake pieces.

  7. Decorate the perimeter with the strawberries; placing the strawberries cut side down. Sprinkle the remaining blueberries on top of the trifle inside the strawberry perimeter.
