Getting Back To My Roots

You may or may not remember back in April I attended the Time Out Chicago Eat Out Awards. At the event I had the pleasure of talking with Greg Mohr, co-owner with Scott Weiner of the “Best New Pizzeria”, Roots Pizza.

Last night, I had the pleasure of actually eating their pizza.

With Roots serving Quad City style pizza, it felt appropriate that I was trying it for the first time with my longtime friend and fellow Iowa girl. It was such a great night, starting with my friend presenting me with a boque of flowers and an adorable card asking me to be a bridesmaid in her wedding!

We ordered Spinach, Roasted Red Pepper & Artichoke Dip that was served with these awesome pita chips that were the perfect combo of soft and crunchy. There was no question that we had to order the Taco pizza, which consisted of taco-seasoned housemade crumbled sausage, mozzarella and cheddar blended cheese, topped with shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, and taco-seasoned chips. The crust, which was a combo of soft and chewy, was just the right thickness to support the many delicious toppings. Hot sauce is served alongside the pizza, and it’s a delicious and necessary addition. Although we grew up in Des Moines and not the Quad Cities, this unique pizza was very much a thing of our childhood.

The whole evening felt very nostalgic, eating taco pizza with my friend of 15 years, whose wedding I’m now going to stand up in…just getting back to my roots.
