Several weeks ago when I voted for the Time Out Chicago 2012 Readers’ Choice Eat Out Awards, I couldn’t have guessed that I would be attending the live award ceremony. Thanks to the Chicago Blogger Network, I was invited to live Tweet the winners, as they were announced. The Readers’ Choice Awards recognize restaurants in categories, such as “Best New Sweet Shop” and “Best New Breakfast”. Some of my personal favorites, like Doughnut Vault and The Southern Mac Truck, took home awards. It was such an exciting night being surrounded by some of the cities best chefs and restaurateurs.

What would a foodie event be without great food? There was no shortage of delectable eats, including Macaroni & Cheese, Fried Buffalo Chicken Skewers, and Root Beer and Red Wine-braised Short Rib Burgers. Dessert of Chocolate Chip Ice Cream Sandwiches and Carrot Cake Squares was just as tasty and visually appealing as the appetizers.

At the end of the night, I had the opportunity to sit down with the winner of the “Best New Pizzeria” Award, Greg Mohr of Roots Pizza. The restaurant features pizza from Mohr’s, well, roots, the Quad Cities. He was so addicted to his hometown pizza, he brought it to the Windy City. I’ve had New York-style pizza, and consumed one too many slices of Chicago’s deep dish, but what the heck is Quad Cities-style pizza? We’re talking hand tossed dough, spicier tomato sauce, and A LOT more cheese. Roots best sellers: House-made crumbled Sausage Pizza and Taco Pizza. Wait, did he say Taco Pizza? Now this was bringing me back to my roots. As an Iowa girl whose mom is also from the Quad Cities, I discovered we both grew up eating Taco Pizza, a staple at a local pizzeria chain. I know where I’m going for pizza next! Congrats to Greg and everyone at Roots Pizza!
