Get In My Belly

Tucked under the El tracks of the Western Blue line stop, Belly Shack is the second of Bill Kim’s low-key, no-frills BYOB restaurants.

Asian street fare is served in a highly industrial, barely finished space with metal stools and graffiti-ed walls, creating a very believable vibe. The food blends Asian and Latin influences to create eclectic dishes that will blow your mind.

The flavors in the Hot & Sour Soup with hominy, chicken and cilantro were definitely pulled from both sides of the map; it was like tortilla soup meets tom yum soup. The soup packed some major punch that kept me coming back for another spoonful.

The Organic Brown Rice Bowl with tofu, Chinese broccoli, mushrooms and kimchi had lots of delicious goodies that were conservatively coated in a teriyaki-like marinade. We also shared a side of Brussel Spouts & Chorizo, as well as Togarashi Spiced Fries with Curry Mayo; these are not to be underestimated because they are truly something special.

Whatever you do, please, please, PLEASE do not go to Belly Shack without ordering the soft serve ice cream with custom toppings; it would be a colossal mistake. I know what you’re thinking, “I can get soft serve at Dairy Queen”. But nothing compares to the Mint Brownie or Vietnamese Cinnamon Caramel toppings by Pastry Chef, Mindy Segal. These desserts are truly one of the most heavenly things I’ve ever tasted in ice cream form. Just order it; you will not be sorry.
