The Vault

You’d think after last weekend’s doughnut post, and now this one, that I’m doughnut obsessed. That’s really not the case, or it wasn’t the case until I first tried The Doughnut Vault when they opened last spring.

I’ve been meaning to write about this coveted gem for quite some time, but I guess I was waiting for the hype to die down. But that hasn’t really happened. I’m embarrassed to say that just a few weeks ago I waited, IN THE RAIN, for ONE HOUR, for a box of doughnuts. It was all for a good cause though; my doughnut-loving mother-in-law was in town and I did not want her to go one more Chicago visit being deprived of the giant inner tubes of deliciousness from The Doughnut Vault.

If you’re not familiar with this shop, you might question, “Why the long wait for a freakin doughnut?” See, The Doughnut Vault is only a 5 by 10 foot space that cranks out hand-made artisan doughnuts. Only a certain number are produced each day and when they’re gone, they’re gone. Since the place is so small, a line forms outside, and that notorious line often grows to 50 people deep. But let me tell you, when you hit the front of that line and you step inside the vault, it kind of feels like you’ve won the lottery…ok that might be going a bit far. The sweet smell of the glazed, chocolate, chestnut and gingerbread doughnuts engulfs you and hits you like a ton of bricks. Or rather it hits you like a giant inflated soft fluffy doughy ring of pure goodness. I will personally buy your doughnut if you claim to not like doughnuts and can honestly say you didn’t fully enjoy every last morsel of a Doughnut Vault doughnut.

So I don’t think it’s so much that I’m obsessed with doughnuts; it’s more just this place. I’d be lying if I said their hard-to-obtain nature didn’t make them even more appealing. And I love the charm of the menu painted on the brick building outside the door, and the old-fashioned cash register once you’re inside. On Saturdays they usually offer a specialty flavor, which was Mocha Hazelnut Crunch the day I was there last. But each time I’m there, I continue to be wowed by the bold, caramely, nutty flavor of the chestnut doughnut. My only gripe – they’re not open on Sundays. But that’s probably a blessing in disguise.
