Doughnuts and Coffee

Chicago was so fortunate to have two days of gorgeous fall weather this weekend. It was the perfect cool temperature where a long-sleeved t-shirt and scarf was all you needed to be comfortable outside. The sun was shinning and colorful leaves were falling.

My husband and I started our idyllic Saturday in the most decadent way: with a trip to the Sweets Stand at Table Fifty Two. Every Saturday in October, Table Fifty Two’s pastry chef CeCe Campise is opening their doors from 8-11 AM to greet you with giant, warm doughnuts and Chef Art Smith’s famous Hummingbird Cupcakes.

Yesterday’s doughnut flavors were Apple Pie or Pumpkin Pie. My husband and I split an enormous Apple Pie doughnut that was literally busting at the seams with warm apples and filling. The outside was perfectly crispy and covered in vanilla sugar; the inside was dense and doughy and more delicious that words can describe. My breakfast was washed down with a hot cup of coffee, although the Belgium hot chocolate with homemade marshmallows would have been a delicious choice as well.

Of course we couldn’t leave without snagging Table Fifty Two’s iconic Hummingbird Cupcakes, which are special because of the pineapple, banana and cream cheese frosting.

Next Saturday is the last day of Sweets Stand, so go and get your doughnut!
