Native Foods

I couldn’t be Vegan.

A juicy burger, a fabulous cheese plate, and a piping hot bowl of chicken noodle soup are things I enjoy way too much.

But when Native Foods Café opens in your city, it certainly makes the thought of cutting out all things animal-derived sound a lot less brutal.

The all Vegan restaurant was already on my radar when I received a reader request that I try the newly arrived California chain. So with that kick in the butt, I promptly visited Native Foods last week with one of my friends.

We started with the Native Nachos which included homemade corn tortilla chips covered in black beans, Native Taco Meat, Native Chipotle Crema, Native Cheese, salsa fresco, and guacamole and topped with corn, green onions, and cilantro. The nachos earned an A+ for presentation, but unfortunately I cannot say the same for taste. With each bite I tasted a trace of sweetness. When I determined that it was from the hummus-like item, I asked a waitress what it was. Apparently it was the Native Cheese, which resembled cheese about as much as I resemble Snooki from the Jersey Shore. The cNative Taco Meat was weak in flavor and was far too soft and finely crumbled to seem like real meat. Going forward, for my nacho cravings, I’ll be sticking to the real deal, queso and all!

Next we shared the Chicken Run Ranch Burger which was crispy battered Native Chicken, ranch dressing, romaine, carrots and onions, served with Native Seasoned Fries. Contrary to the nachos, this sandwich was amazing! There was nothing about this that I didn’t love. The “chicken” was nicely crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Served on the side was the vegan ranch dressing which was insane and tasted just as good as any other ranch dressing I’ve ever liked. And the seasoned fries, wow, let’s just say I wished I had an entire plate of these. The seasoned fries dunked in the ranch equaled perfection. I would highly recommend this chicken sandwich, especially if you’re new to vegan eating!

For dessert my friend and I shared a chocolate cupcake. The frosting was sweet, fluffy and yummy and the cake was good too, although slightly dry.

Despite my dislike of the nachos, I was quite pleased with Native Foods. The dishes being delivered to neighboring tables had impressive presentations and looked delicious; the staff was very friendly and helpful and the restaurant had a relaxed, chill vibe. I plan on coming back and trying the French Dip and one of the Earth Bowls.
