Q-ed Up and Ready

I am the antithesis of a Midwesterner.

I don’t eat ribs or pulled pork or gnaw on giant turkey legs at the State Fair, and the only brisket I like is the kind my mom makes during the holidays.

So when it comes to going out for Barbecue, it’s hardly my first choice.

But there is something different about Chicago Q, something that makes it more my style.

Maybe it’s because the meat isn’t smothered in sauce, rather the four house-made barbecue sauces are served on the side for one to dip and distribute at will. Or perhaps it’s Q’s delicious non-meat appetizers and sides that are just as much a focus as the carnivorous options. Either way, the times I’ve dined at this “dressed up” down-home restaurant have been nothing but positive, and no bib or wet naps were needed.

One of my favorite dishes at Q is the BBQ Lemon Shrimp and Grilled Polenta appetizer. The jumbo shrimp and slightly sweet cornmeal triangles are flavored by flame marks and the lemony buttery sauce on the side. For dinner this past Saturday night I chose the Pulled Chicken Sandwich which I dolled up with a conservative coating of the Original Mild barbecue sauce. All entrees are served with a choice of fries, cornbread or coleslaw, each option being equally enticing. This time I went with the coleslaw, which I found to be a cold and refreshing contrast to the rest of the items on the table. For sides, we selected a double order of the Bruleed Macaroni and Cheese. Q’s mac and cheese is decadent and amazing and possesses several of the components that make up my ideal macaroni and cheese. First and foremost, it is made using cavatappi noodles. With the corkscrew shape and tubular design, there never was a noodle better equipped for gathering so much oozy cheese. Second, the dish is made with quality, rich and creamy cheese. READ: No powder or fake cheeses. And finally, it’s served piping hot with a crusty breadcrumb topping. Q’s other side dishes include Kobe Brisket Baked Beans, Poblano Cheddar Cornbread and Buttermilk Mashed Potatoes. Whatever you choose, I assure you will not be disappointed.
